Question: I get "Unable to connect to ethernet adapter" error on Windows 2000/XP even when I have an ethernet card and 'ipconfig /all' displays the physical address. This can happen when the network is down or if no LAN cable is connected to your ethernet device. Windows 2000 and Windows XP support Media Sense feature to detect the state of a network connection. If the network is down or if the LAN cable is disconnected, the system unbinds all the protocols from the adapter. This causes the license manager to fail since it cannot obtain the MAC (ethernet) address of the machine when the required protocols are not bound. Workaround: ----------- To disable the Media Sense feature, please follow the steps mentioned below. These steps update the registry and should be done with care. It is advisable to take a backup of the registry before doing this. a) Click Start -> Run and type 'regedit'. This opens the registry editor. b) Go to the following entry in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters c) Add the following value name by right clicking, New -> DWORD Value 1) Change the value name to "DisableDHCPMediaSense" 2) Set the data value to "1'. d) Close the registry editor and restart the computer.
